Making fun of the Spaniards was allowed during Carnival without any repercussions to the indigenous populace. A Spaniard is depicted as a drunk with a wart on top of his very large nose with the infamous measle spots covering the entire head. Our recycled tin masks are usually painted in garish colors, but ever since that visit to the taller we have loved the plain unpainted versions.
Almost square in size, more of a throw, fun to have it laying around. The eye dazzling effect of the narrow bands and uneven patina of the blue/grey bands in entirety, plus the bold rust/orange colors in the center. Oruro Region. Bring on your inner urban boho in these one-of-a-kind vintage shawls. Rectangular, fringe runs along three sides. Wrap as a skirt or drape as a shawl.Back story: Once the fashion must in streets of Victorian Madrid, these “manila” shawls became “mantas de cholitas” in urban Bolivia, as the 19th century ended. Every Aymara woman of means had one to show off and a black one for mourning. This machine embroidered piece is about 50 years old and has extraordinary hand knotted macrame fringe work.
